Continental WinterContact TS 860 S Winter Tyres Driven Review


The long awaited new Continental WinterContact TS 860 S winter tyres by Continental are finally released after having the TS 850 tyre series that are one of the best Winter Tyres available even by today's standard. This success has brought on to the WinterContact TS 860 S, leading them into winning the AutoBild 2017 winter tyre test. Continental mentioned during their press release that the new WinterContact TS 860 S are designed with passenger safety and sporty driving during winter conditions in mind with the tyres capable of speed limit up to 168mph/270kmh.

There are total 3 tyre models release for the TS 860 tyre series: TS 860, TS 860 S, and TS 860 P. This article will review specifically TS 860 tyre only. The TS 860 S winter tyre is designed with 3 main focus in mind:

1. Short braking distance in dry, wet and snow conditions.

2. Precise handling for Sports and Premium cars in dry conditions.

3. Top class handling properties in snow conditions.

One of the secret weapon deployed by Continental engineers to achieve these goals are by the means of its deep and wide 'Braking Groove'.

Conti TS860S Braking Grooves

These wide central braking grooves allows snows to slide through the tyre for maximum grips on snowing road conditions. The new tyre also comes with the 3PMSF marking on its sidewall, certifying its performance in winter conditions.

In addition to braking grooves, Continental engineers also deployed wide solid blocks on the thread shoulders for more precise handling in all weather conditions including winter.

As the all new WinterContact TS 860 S is set to replace its widely accepted predecessor WinterContact TS 850 P for winter performance supporting sport cars and premium car brands. Continental is already on the move to work with manufacturers including Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche to release specific vehicle customised version of the new WinterContact TS 860 S.

The Continental WinterContact TS 860 S is available in 14 different sizes from 18 to 21 inches. Six of them comes with Continental's SSR runflat and ContiSilent technologies. This list will continue to grow when Continental starts to partner with automotive manufacturers for vehicle customised tyre sizes.

Continental TS 860 S Lateral Grooves

The blocks of the ribs are separated by thin lateral grooves that forms a stiff rib due to the forces while braking. This significantly reduces braking distance especially for sport drivings on winter road conditions.

Continental TS860S wide solid thread shoulders

The wide big blocks on the thread shoulder to increase contact area with the ground for greater traction and control. Result of the larger footprint is a more precise steering while cornering on winter road conditions.
