Dunlop Winter Sport 5 Winter Tyres Driven Review

Dunlop launched the all new Winter Sport 5 to replace the Dunlop Winter Sport 4D that was originally customised for Mercedes C-Class. The Dunlop Winter Sport 4D received excellent results in professional tyre testings and is highly recommended by most drivers.

The new Dunlop Winter Sport 5 targets mainly sporty passenger cars. In comparison to the outgoing Winter Sport 4D, the new tyre performs 10%-13% better on ice and offers reduced rolling resistance.

We tested the new Dunlop Winter Sport 5 using 4 different vehicles: Honda Accord, Audi TT, BMW X5, and Jaguar F-Pace and driven over 3000 miles. These tyres were tested in snow, mud and heavy rain conditions. As an overall, the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 provided excellent grips in all conditions including on the dry. This gives absolute confidence to all our drivers in maneuvering across harsh weather conditions such as deep snow, heavy rain and aquaplaning. However, on ice it is still not as good as studded tyres on ice.

The Dunlop Winter Sport 5 is astonishingly quiet and comfortable. The only drawback when the winter tyre were tested with the Audi TT in high speed over 150km/h (100mph) the Winter Sport 5 noticeably floats, but in speeds between 120km/h and 150km/h the tyres performs extraordinarily even in dry conditions and high speed corners. The biggest advantage is the tyres remains silent even over high speeds.

Dunlop Winter Sport 5 made effective grip possible with innovative tread pattern, reduced weight, and made from latest material compounds. The major element improved from Winter Sport 4D is the wider grooves that ensures excellent grip and performance on winter surfaces. The tread design also allows for effective dispersal of water, mud and snow.

Winter Sport 5 featured numerous blades all over the tread surface that bites onto any surface type, letting you feel at ease when driving even in the most difficult winter conditions and at high speeds. Another major improvement in its lightweight contruction that is crucial for sports car owners. This helps to reduce energy consumption and improve handling of the car.

8 Key technologies implemented for the Dunlop Winter Sport 5:

1. Specific Bead Seat System

Link between tyre and rim is strengthen for more precise driving experience and enhances control with outstanding road feedback.

2. Jointless Belt (JLB) Construction

JLB is initially constructed for motorcycle tyres with intention of applying racing tyre performance standards to street tyres. The JLB construction eliminates belt overlaps resulting in smoother handling and more stable contact patch with the road.

3. Flatter Tread Profile

Increase in contact patch by 4% to 8% depending on tyre size helps to deliver more stability and enhanced road feedback, allowing tires to respond quickly and steer precisely.

4. Multi Radius Tread (MRT)

MRT designs employs ten different radii, results in highly effective pressure deployment on the road contact patch. This gives you better cornering control and more responsive handling on both wet and dry conditions.

5. Multi Blade System

Dunlop's multiple blade system caters for different demands from snow, dry and wet conditions. Giving the tyre consistent performance in various winter conditions.

6. Silica-Plus Compound

Tread compound derived from motorsport delivers high levels of grip on wet roads and cold temperatures. This benefits braking and acceleration in wet and cold condition while reducing tyre wear.

7. V-Shape Grooves

'V' shaped grooves in conjunction with the tread's basic grooves creates a fine network which collects snow for enhanced snow-on-snow traction and grip.

8. Directional Tread Design

Designed for cold wet morning drives, where water are forced between the grooves and quickly channeled away from tyre surface. This reduce the risk of aquaplaning.

Key benefits from the 8 technological innovation to the Dunlop Winter Sport 5:

1. Supreme Lateral Grip on Slippery Surfaces

The innovative angled center sipes is increased in length to improve their ability to open and grab onto surfaces, ensuring excellent lateral grip on slippery winter roads.

2. Enhanced Performance on Snow-Covered Roads

The increase in number of blocks provides the Winter Sport 5 additional edges in contact with the road surface for superior grip and traction in snow.

3. Aquaplaning Defense

Deep grooves in the tire tread allows the Winter Sport 5 to evacuate large amount of water, reducing the chances of aquaplaning and helps to maintain control on wet road conditions.

4. Fuel Efficiency

The lightweight construction of Winter Sport 5 together with lower rolling resistance gives greater fuel efficiency.
